Google DeepMind introduces SynthID Bio watermarking for proteins

SynthID Bio embeds an imperceptible signature into protein sequences and predicted 3D structures, verifiable on synthesized proteins and preserving biological function in laboratory tests.

What changed

Embeds watermarks in protein sequences and predicted 3D coordinates (via AlphaFold 3 fine-tuning); wet-lab tests on three targets (VEGF-A, SARS-CoV-2 spike protein RBD, PD-L1) preserved biological function.

Why it matters

DNA synthesis providers and database curators can get an automated verification signal for AI-designed sequences, helping focus screening and reduce exhaustive manual reviews and mislabeled entries.
